Selank for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (NOT FDA-Approved) — Brain
Russian-approved anxiolytic peptide for GAD. Equal efficacy to benzodiazepines WITHOUT sedation, dependence, or withdrawal. NOT FDA-approved. Best evidence for anxiety disorders.
Overview
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) derived from tuftsin, developed at Russian Academy of Sciences. REGULATORY: Approved by Russian Federation Ministry of Health in 2009 for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Available by prescription in Russia and Ukraine. NOT FDA-approved in US or most Western countries. BEST EVIDENCE: GAD - RCT (n=62) showed equal anxiolytic efficacy to medazepam (benzodiazepine) PLUS additional antiasthenic and psychostimulant effects. KEY ADVANTAGE: Equal anxiety reduction WITHOUT sedation, dependence, tolerance, or withdrawal syndrome. RAPID RESPONSE STUDY (n=20): 40% rapid responders (improvement by Day 3), 60% conventional responders (improvement by Day 14). SAFETY: Excellent - minimal side effects (nasal irritation, headache). Mechanism: GABAergic modulation, affects neurotransmission-related gene expression. LIMITATIONS: Most evidence Russian with limited Western validation; recommended for SHORT-TERM use only (2-3 weeks). Better evidence than BPC-157/TB-500/Dihexa but less rigorous than FDA-approved anxiolytics.
Indications
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder (BEST EVIDENCE - Russian-approved indication, RCTs)
- Neurasthenia/chronic stress (Russian-approved indication)
- Alternative to benzodiazepines (equal efficacy without dependence)
- Cognitive enhancement (LIMITED EVIDENCE - secondary benefit)
- Immunomodulation (from tuftsin parent compound)
- Depression/mood disorders (LIMITED EVIDENCE - adjunct use only)
Mechanism of Action
Elevated stress hormones and dysregulated neurotransmitters cause anxiety, poor stress adaptation, and mood instability
Dosing
| Compound | Dose | Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selank 0.15% | 150-300 mcg (1-2 drops per nostril) | Once or twice daily | Start low for 7-10 days to assess response |
| Selank 0.15% | 300-600 mcg (2-4 drops per nostril) | 1-2 times daily | Optimal anxiolytic and cognitive effects, lasts 4-6 hours |
| N-Acetyl Selank Amidate | 300-600 mcg | Once or twice daily | Extended duration (8-12 hours), more stable formulation |
| Selank | 250-500 mcg | Once daily | Higher bioavailability, longer-lasting effects |
