Pumpkin Seed Oil for Hair Loss — Supplements

Oral pumpkin seed oil (400 mg/day) demonstrated 40% increase in hair count vs 10% placebo in a 2014 Korean double-blind RCT in men with androgenetic alopecia.

Overview

Pumpkin seed oil (PSO, from Cucurbita pepo seeds) is a nutritional oil rich in phytosterols (notably delta-7-sterols: delta-7-avenasterol, delta-7-stigmastenol), linoleic acid, zinc, and cucurbitin. Its role in hair loss treatment is supported by a 2014 double-blind, placebo-controlled Korean RCT (Cho et al., Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine) — the first and most rigorous human trial of oral PSO for AGA. The study enrolled 76 men with mild-to-moderate androgenetic alopecia; participants received either pumpkin seed oil 400 mg/day in capsule form or placebo for 24 weeks. Hair count increased by 40% in the PSO group versus 10% in the placebo group (p<0.05), with PSO-treated patients reporting significantly higher self-assessment improvement (p=0.013) and satisfaction scores (p=0.003). The proposed mechanism is dual: delta-7 phytosterols structurally mimic the sterol substrate of 5α-reductase and competitively inhibit the enzyme, reducing DHT production, while cucurbitin (a unique amino acid in pumpkin) may have additional anti-androgenic properties. Pumpkin seed oil also provides zinc — a known cofactor for 5α-reductase function and hair follicle cell proliferation. While the evidence base is limited to a single published RCT, the result (40% vs 10% in a well-designed blinded study) is clinically meaningful. The safety profile is excellent, making PSO a low-risk adjunct to established AGA protocols.

Indications

  • Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) — male pattern hair loss, primarily
  • Hair loss adjunctive support (combined with minoxidil or saw palmetto)
  • Hair loss management in patients declining pharmaceutical therapy

Mechanism of Action

Delta-7 sterols (delta-7-avenasterol, delta-7-stigmastenol) abundant in pumpkin seed oil structurally resemble the natural sterol substrate of 5α-reductase, competitively inhibiting the enzyme and reducing DHT production from testosterone — a mechanism shared with pharmaceutical 5-ARIs but less potent

Safety & Contraindications

  • Excellent safety profile — no significant adverse effects reported in clinical trials or post-market use
  • High caloric density — pumpkin seed oil is approximately 120 kcal/tablespoon; capsule doses (400 mg) are clinically relevant without meaningful caloric impact
  • Mild GI discomfort possible — take with food
  • No known significant drug interactions at 400 mg/day dose
  • May have mild blood pressure-lowering effects — use caution in hypotension
  • Avoid in pumpkin seed allergy (rare)
  • Evidence base limited to a single RCT in men — evidence for women with AGA or FPHL is extrapolated, not established
