Phenylpiracetam — Enhanced Racetam Nootropic — Brain

Phenyl-substituted piracetam derivative with higher potency and stimulant properties. Banned by WADA. Not FDA-approved.

Overview

Phenylpiracetam (Phenotropil, Carphedon) is a phenyl-substituted derivative of piracetam developed in Russia in 1983 at the Russian Academy of Sciences. The addition of a phenyl group to piracetam's pyrrolidine ring increases blood-brain barrier penetration and potency by approximately 20-60 fold compared to piracetam, while also adding psychostimulant and anxiolytic properties not present in the parent compound. Phenylpiracetam was developed for Soviet cosmonauts to enhance cognitive function and stress tolerance during space missions. It is approved in Russia as a prescription nootropic (Phenotropil) for conditions including cognitive decline, depression, and post-stroke recovery. Clinical studies (primarily Russian literature) report improvements in attention, memory, mood, and psychomotor speed. Phenylpiracetam also has cold-resistance and physical performance-enhancing properties, leading to its ban by WADA. It was notably detected in the doping case of Olympic biathlete Olga Pyleva in 2006. In the nootropic community, phenylpiracetam is prized for its combination of cognitive enhancement and mild stimulant effects without the jitteriness of traditional stimulants. Tolerance develops relatively quickly with daily use, so intermittent dosing is typically recommended. Effective doses are 100-300 mg daily, much lower than piracetam.
