Digestive Enzymes — Supplements
Multi-enzyme formulation supporting macronutrient digestion and nutrient absorption.
Overview
Digestive enzyme supplements contain a combination of proteases, lipases, amylases, and specialty enzymes (lactase, cellulase, alpha-galactosidase) that assist in the breakdown of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and plant fibers. They are clinically indicated for exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) and may benefit individuals with functional dyspepsia, lactose intolerance, or age-related enzyme decline. Prescription pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) has strong evidence for EPI, while OTC broad-spectrum enzyme supplements have moderate evidence for functional GI complaints.
Indications
- Functional dyspepsia and bloating
- Lactose intolerance management
- Age-related digestive enzyme decline
- Post-meal discomfort and maldigestion
Mechanism of Action
Exogenous enzymes supplement endogenous secretions to break down macronutrients in the small intestine
