Overview

Curcumin is the principal curcuminoid in turmeric (Curcuma longa) with potent anti-inflammatory effects mediated through NF-kB inhibition, COX-2 suppression, and modulation of multiple inflammatory signaling cascades. Native curcumin has poor oral bioavailability (<1%) due to rapid hepatic metabolism and poor absorption. Co-administration with piperine (from black pepper) inhibits glucuronidation and increases curcumin bioavailability by 2,000%. RCTs demonstrate efficacy comparable to NSAIDs for osteoarthritis pain and improvements in metabolic and inflammatory markers.
