Citrulline Malate — Supplements

Amino acid precursor to arginine that enhances nitric oxide production and exercise performance.

Overview

L-citrulline malate combines the amino acid L-citrulline with malic acid. Citrulline is converted to arginine in the kidneys, providing a more effective means of raising plasma arginine and nitric oxide levels than direct arginine supplementation (which undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism). Malate contributes to the TCA cycle as an anaplerotic substrate. Studies demonstrate improvements in exercise performance, reduced post-exercise soreness, and enhanced blood flow. Evidence is strongest for resistance exercise performance.

Indications

  • Exercise performance enhancement (resistance and endurance)
  • Nitric oxide and blood flow augmentation
  • Post-exercise muscle soreness reduction
  • Ammonia clearance and urea cycle support

Mechanism of Action

Citrulline is converted to arginine via argininosuccinate synthase and lyase in the kidneys
