Chondroitin Sulfate — Supplements
Glycosaminoglycan component of cartilage with structure-modifying potential in osteoarthritis.
Overview
Chondroitin sulfate is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found in articular cartilage extracellular matrix. It provides structural integrity and resistance to compression in cartilage tissue. Pharmaceutical-grade chondroitin sulfate has demonstrated symptomatic improvement in knee osteoarthritis in multiple European RCTs, with some evidence for structure-modifying effects (reduced joint space narrowing). Results from GAIT trial were mixed, though subgroup analyses showed benefit in moderate-severe OA. ESCEO recommends it as first-line treatment for knee OA.
Indications
- Knee osteoarthritis symptom management
- Cartilage protection and structure modification
- Joint function improvement
- Pain reduction in degenerative joint disease
Mechanism of Action
Incorporates into cartilage extracellular matrix, contributing to compressive resistance and hydration
