Boswellia Serrata — Supplements
Frankincense-derived resin extract with selective 5-LOX inhibition for anti-inflammatory applications.
Overview
Boswellia serrata extract contains boswellic acids, particularly AKBA (3-O-acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid), which selectively inhibit 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) and reduce leukotriene synthesis. Unlike NSAIDs, boswellic acids do not inhibit COX-1, potentially preserving gastric mucosal integrity. Multiple RCTs demonstrate efficacy in osteoarthritis symptom reduction, with some trials showing superiority to valdecoxib. Additional evidence supports use in inflammatory bowel disease and asthma.
Indications
- Osteoarthritis pain and stiffness
- Inflammatory joint conditions
- Inflammatory bowel disease (adjunctive)
- Asthma management (adjunctive)
Mechanism of Action
AKBA selectively inhibits 5-lipoxygenase, reducing leukotriene B4 and other pro-inflammatory mediators
