Betaine TMG — Supplements

Trimethylglycine serving as a methyl donor for homocysteine metabolism and osmolyte for cellular protection.

Overview

Betaine (trimethylglycine, TMG) is a naturally occurring osmolyte and methyl donor derived from choline oxidation. It donates methyl groups to homocysteine via betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase (BHMT), supporting the methionine cycle and reducing homocysteine levels. As an osmolyte, betaine protects cells against osmotic stress. Moderate evidence supports its use for homocysteine reduction, exercise performance, and body composition improvement.

Indications

  • Homocysteine reduction
  • Methylation support
  • Exercise performance and power output
  • Body composition optimization
  • Liver health and lipid metabolism

Mechanism of Action

Donates a methyl group to homocysteine via BHMT, regenerating methionine

Safety & Contraindications

  • Generally well tolerated with minimal side effects
  • May cause GI discomfort (nausea, diarrhea) at higher doses
  • Fishy body odor possible due to trimethylamine production
  • Monitor cholesterol in hyperlipidemic patients (may raise LDL in some)
