Alpha-Lipoic Acid — Supplements
Universal antioxidant with both water- and fat-soluble properties, supporting mitochondrial function and glucose metabolism.
Overview
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a naturally occurring dithiol compound that functions as an essential cofactor for mitochondrial enzymes involved in energy metabolism. As both a water- and fat-soluble antioxidant, ALA uniquely regenerates other antioxidants including vitamins C and E, and glutathione. Clinical trials support its use in diabetic neuropathy, with moderate evidence for glucose metabolism improvement and oxidative stress reduction.
Indications
- Diabetic peripheral neuropathy
- Insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism
- Oxidative stress reduction
- Heavy metal chelation support
- Nerve function support
Mechanism of Action
Serves as cofactor for pyruvate dehydrogenase and alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase in the Krebs cycle
