Lion's Mane Mushroom — Medicinal mushroom / neuroactive botanical

Lion's Mane contains two classes of neuroactive compounds: hericenones (benzaldehyde derivatives — found in fruiting body) and erinacines (cyathane diterpenoids — found in mycelium). Both stimulate Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) synthesis in the brain and peripheral nervous system by activating the JNK pathway and NGF transcription. NGF supports neuronal survival, axonal growth, myelination, and synaptic plasticity. Also stimulates Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). Preliminary human data: Japanese RCT (Mori 2009, n=30; MMSE scores in mild cognitive impairment significantly improved vs. placebo). Anti-inflammatory via NF-κB suppression. Emerging data for depression/anxiety.
